So many of you have asked for tips on how to find and pick the right kind of images for your nail stamping plates that I thought I’d make a little how-to article. I hope you find it helpful!
Here are some examples of images that work well:
These hearts work because they have thick bold lines, only 2 colours in the image and good quality resolution.
This cat outline works because even though the lines are thinner than the hearts they are still solid lines and the image has a good resolution. You will want something at least 600x600 to work well.
Bold silhouettes also work well as long as you stay with clean borders and avoid jagged edges. These work best in small stamps or repeated designs for a full nail wallpaper type effect for best stamping ability.
Now for some examples of images that don’t work well or at all:
This rose has more than two colours so will not work for making a stamp.
Although black and white, these flowers have too many small lines and details to stamp well. The image will be messy and hard to see in a size small enough to fit on a nail.
The jukebox is in greyscale, so it will not work. I need the images in 2 colours only, black and white, grey and white, green and red etc but black, white and greys will not work. If the picture you find is not black and white please let me know what colour you want to stamp.
This butterfly is just too small! You might not think so as it only has to fit on a finger nail but I need bigger resolution images for the plates to come out well. Don’t worry, I will shrink them down to the size you require :)
And finally… a note about watermarks. A watermark is what you can see in the example above, the words going across the image reading “Custom Stamp”. I cannot use images with watermarks. They would end up being in the stamp and it usually means you have to purchase or at least get the author’s permission to use the image.
So, where can you find great images? If you search Google Images, there is an option near the top called Search Tools. The first option is size, so you can immediately find the right size of images. Another great site for free clip art and images is www.Clker.com. You can also download the images in a large size that works well!
